So I've seen Roxie and
her band a couple of times now, beginning with their weekly gig at Fais Do Do, and most
recently at the HAC. Roxie's current band consists of her on
vocals, a trombone, a trumpet, a sax, drums, bass, piano, and congas. They play a mix of swing and mambo, which, while not my cup of tea, is executed professionally. The swing, sadly, mostly takes on the aura of a jazz combo trading solos. One of my friends told me this is because since they are a new band, they don't quite have enough original material to fill two sets, so long songs flesh out the evening. On the other hand, that's bad for dancers, because it can get pretty exhausting. Wish I understood Spanish: I think she sings "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen"in that language. Still, since they are a new band, you will have lots of dance floor to work it. I would give them a C+. With time hopefully they will play more danceful swing, but I don't think the 70/30 ratio of swing to mambo will increase. That's too low for me. |
